WHY YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST VISIT TEXAS IN THE WINTER
Howdy, y’all! Welcome to my Texas blog post! Yeehaw!! Now… before I get talking about all my epic Texas adventures… I want to ask you a few questions. First, have you ever visited Texas in the winter? Second, have you ever visited the smaller towns of the Texas Hill Country area? Now… let’s pair these questions together! Have you ever visited the Texas Hill Country area during the winter months? More likely than not… you haven’t. And why haven’t you? Because the winter months in Texas are actually the slowest months for tourism… and quite frankly, a lot of people are not putting Texas on their bucket list for this time of the year. BUT WAIT. I’m here to tell you otherwise!! I AM HERE to tell you why visiting Texas (specifically Texas Hill Country) is actually one of the best ideas ever!
During the first week of January, my husband and I ventured on down to Texas!! We have good friends that live in Houston… and we thought it would be fun to venture outside of Houston to road trip through the Texas Hill Country. And that’s exactly what we did! But before I gush to you all about our fun adventures… I wanted to tell you about the reasons we chose to road trip through this specific area of Texas, and why we chose to do it in January.
-Like I’ve mentioned before, January is one of the slowest months for Texan tourism. Most everyone is done and over with traveling for the holidays, and to be honest, it’s not the warmest. It was an average of about 50’s during the day… so, some outdoor activities may not be as enjoyable as in the summer months. But guess what? With slower tourism months come some major perks!! And those outdoor summer activities? They can still be enjoyed… just in a different way!
-If you travel to Texas in the off-season, you are going to be 110% getting some lower prices on lodging, activities… and even airfare! This is my favorite part about traveling during these times… you can save so much money!
-Another major bonus of traveling during the slower season? LESS CROWDS. And I seriously mean it!!! We went to major Texas bucket list destinations, and NO ONE was there. For reals!! We had so many beautiful places to ourselves. And trust me… that is NOT going to happen in the busier and more touristy travel months.
-Why smaller towns in the Texas Hill Country area? Because it’s honestly such a great road trip route!! There are a plethora of wonderful small towns throughout this entire part of Texas that are just bursting with culture, character, and charisma! And it honestly takes less than an hour to travel between the towns. So, you can see a lot of various towns in not a lot of time.
So… enough of me babbling!! Let me start showcasing all the cool towns we visited!
First stop on the Texas Hill Country road trip… Round Rock! Round Rock is a smaller town about 20 minutes outside of Austin. It is the perfect retreat if you’re looking to get out of the bustling city, and spend a few days in a different Texas environment. The downtown Round Rock area, is absolutely charming… and runs along the tranquil Brushy Creek… a scene of absolute beauty.
Just like many other towns in Texas, Round Rock has a plethora of warm weather activities to engage in. But what kind of stuff can you do in the winter months? Let me share some of my favorite things!
Where to stay?
The Ruby Hotel & Bar: First and foremost… you 110% must stay at The Ruby Hotel & Bar! This glitz and glam boutique hotel is located walking distance from downtown Round Rock, and is situated perfectly along Brushy Creek. The second you walk onto the hotel property, you will instantly feel as if you’ve transported back to The Great Gatsby era. With the green and blue jewel toned rooms and impeccably classy interior design… The Ruby Hotel is the perfect place for a wonderful Texas getaway.
While the hotel is often the main focus of a resort property… I also want to give a round of applause for The Ruby Bar. The Ruby Bar is located right next to the hotel, and is completely stunning. You can either sip on your drink or snack on your appetizer inside by the fireplace… or take yourself and your yummy treats to the outdoor patio. The Ruby Bar serves up some amazing happy hour specials, along with a wonderful weekend brunch. Gaze your eyes upon some of the succulent treats you could try…
But before I close out on talking about the wonder that is The Ruby Hotel… I wanted to share about the founding of this hotel, and the hotel’s romantic story… and I thought the best way to do this was to use the words from The Ruby Hotel itself…
Where to eat?
Waffle Love: If you’re looking for a colorful place to eat waffles… then this is your place! Waffle Love is a beyond epic place to eat when you’re visiting Round Rock… or even if you’re in the Austin area. The second you walk into Waffle Love, you immediately start smiling because there’s happy and bright murals and artwork everywhere! And then once you start eating their uniquely delightful waffles… GAME OVER. Hehehe! They have a mix of sweet and savory options, and they are all so yummy! My favorite? The grilled cheese and bisque!
Mi Mundo Coffeehouse & Roastery: There’s nothing I love more than supporting a small business that fosters an amazing mission. Mi Mundo Coffeehouse is a roastery that specializes in Central and South American coffee. They are incredibly environmentally friendly, participate in fair trade business, and focus on sustainability in everything they do. Even better? 25% of their profits go to local or international charities.
Paige’s Bakehouse: One of my favorite places in Round Rock… this spectacular bakery! Paige’s Bakehouse has some of the cutest and most tasty treats ever! If you’re looking for a Texas shaped cookie, edible cookie dough, or a baby cake… then you must visit here! One of the more unique treats I tried? A peanut butter and jelly tart!!
Slapbox Pizza: Ready to try some epic pizza? Look no further!! Slapbox Pizza has got you covered! They have super fun and festive pizza options… and are even looking out for all the lovely gluten-free and vegan pizza lovers! And guess what?! You can order something called “Bakers’ Choice”, which means the kitchen will create a special surprise pizza just for you!
Round Rock Donuts: Originated in 1926… Round Rock Donuts is known as one of the best donut shops in Texas!! Whenever you go there, there’s guaranteed to be a long line… because that’s how fantastic these donuts are!! And are you feeling particularly ambitious? Then be sure to order the “Texas Sized Donut”!! This donut is HUGE… to say the least. Hehehe!
What to do?

Board & Brush: One of the most unique DIY experiences you’ll ever find… Board & Brush is such a gem of Round Rock! This is a studio where you can create your own wooden masterpiece! Choose from a multitude of designs, colors, and quotes… you can truly fashion up whatever your heart desires!
Chisholm Trail Crossing Park: You can’t pay a visit to Round Rock without actually seeing the ROUND ROCK!! Head to this park, bundle up, grab your hot chocolate, and take a scenic walk along the tranquil Brushy Creek. Learn about the history of Round Rock, and how this town got the name it holds now.
Round Rock Honey: Want to visit a place that is creating all the buzzzzzzzzzz? Then stop at this spectacular place! Here you can shop, go on a tour, or even take a class… the possibilities are endless! Shop for actual honey, or honey made skincare products. Tour the “honey houses” to see all the bees in action. Or even participate in your very own beekeeping class. How unique and fun!
Next up on the road trip… Wimberley! Wimberley is about an hour drive from Round Rock, and makes for another perfect stop in Texas Hill Country. As people in Wimberley say… “Welcome to Wimberley, Texas - A little bit of Heaven!” And I couldn’t agree more! This small town boasts serene and quiet vibes, and is ideal for those looking to wind down a bit. It’s even been voted one of America’s best small towns! What did I think of Wimberley? Let’s find out!
Where to stay?
7A Ranch: If you’re looking for a little rest and relaxation in Wimberley… this is where you must stay! This ranch is ideally located right next to the Blanco River, and is the ideal vacation spot for couples, family, friends, or even just yourself! It’s the most perfect spot to spend a few days on a winter retreat, and here’s why…
The lodging accommodations are out of this world! You have lodges, and multiple cabins to choose from… it all depends on what you’re looking for, and the size of your party. During my time here, I stayed in one of the lovely “cantina cabins”. Each one of these adorable cabins includes: central AC and heat, cable TV, a kitchen with all the amenities (no food/condiments provided), private bedrooms (sleeps either 4 or 6), a bathroom, and living area. And then on the outside, you get your own seating area, with a grill and bonfire pit. It’s literally the dream set up!! Not to mention… the cantinas are super cute inside!
But 7A Ranch is not just about the impeccable lodging… there’s so much more to this place! Let’s start off first with their very own Pioneer Town. Literally, an old Western town for you to explore! Straight from the 1880’s, Pioneer Town houses an ice cream parlor, an arcade, a chapel, an opera house, and even a house designed completely of colorful glass bottles. There are so many fun photo opportunities and memories to be made here! The best part about visiting in the off-season? No one else was there! Literally… it was like a ghost town!
Now, let’s move onto the fun recreation opportunities that 7A Ranch offers to guests. Remember how I said this ranch was located on a river? Well, yeah… it’s gorgeous! It’s the perfect place for a sunset stroll, while sipping on some toasty hot chocolate. Want to get a little more adventurous than walking? Try renting a kayak! You can rent kayaks (single or tandem) right from the 7A Ranch office! And one of my favorite aspects of this property… their stunning pool! Did I go swimming? NO. Hahaha! Because it was too cold!! But I did enjoy some quiet time just relaxing by the pool, and taking in all the beauty that was around me.
So, what’s it like staying at 7A Ranch in the winter? FABULOUS. Why? Well, let me tell you!
-You literally are going to feel like you have the entire ranch to yourself! The whole time I was here… it was so peaceful, calming, and relaxing. It’s just the perfect setting to escape for a little bit, unwind, and rejuvenate yourself.
-You can engage in super fun activities that aren’t the most enjoyable in the summer Texas heat… like a great bonfire!!! And what goes great with bonfires? S’MORES!!! Now, here’s my pro tip. Ditch the traditional s'mores, and go for something a little more unique! For my s’mores treat, I used Stroopwafels instead of graham crackers, a “kitchen sink” candy bar, instead of the Hersey’s chocolate bar, and pink marshmallows, instead of white ones. How fun (and tasty) is that?! And don’t forget to occasionally look up and see all the spectacular stars! PLEASE NOTE: if there is a current “burn ban”, you absolutely cannot have a bonfire. 7A Ranch will notify you if there are any restrictions.
-You can indulge in an evening of delightful cooking! Like I mentioned before, the cantina is equipped with cooking equipment and dining utensils… so, you can whip up a full-fledged meal! There are grocery stores nearby… so, it is super convenient to stock up on groceries when you arrive in town. I enjoyed a lovely steak dinner with some “wine” (sparkling grape juice… hehehe!), and my meal couldn’t have been better! Some more fun ideas… bake cookies, create açaí bowls, put together an omelette station for breakfast… you can literally cook and bake up whatever you want!
-Another enjoyable activity to engage in? Turning on one of your favorite movies, popping some popcorn, and just having a night in! What did I do on my night in? I heated up some hot chocolate, and turned it into a whole event! Hehehe! I bought some fun embellishments at the grocery store, and made my hot chocolate look fantastic!
Where to eat?
Jobell Cafe & Bistro: Looking for some delightful French inspired cuisine? Then this artful restaurant is where you need to be headed! This place of dining is unlike any other in Wimberley… it’s a local’s favorite! Enjoy a wonderful wine list, relaxing outdoor atmosphere, and food that will leave you feeling 100% fulfilled.
The Leaning Pear: This restaurant is such a special place… it’s a place where family, friends, and food all come together to create a overall sense of happiness. The Leaning Pear focuses on creating fresh, seasonal, and local food. When you come to dine here, you will fall in love with everything around you. As the folks of The Leaning pear say, “Eat well, love much, laugh often!”
Community Pizza & Beer Garden: Feeling the need for some epic pizza? Well… Community Pizza is your new best friend! I always love specialty pizza joints, and this place serves up some of the most unique pizza! One of their coolest pizzas? “The Illuminati”… which is made up of confit garlic, mozzarella, oven onions, soppressata, sausage, gorgonzola, hot honey, serranos, and lava salt. Holy yum!!!
What to do?
Jacob’s Well Natural Area: One of the most beautiful natural areas in all of Texas! Jacob’s Well is an artesian spring, that is most commonly known to be an epic swimming hole in the summer months. Now, you might be thinking… why on earth would I go to a swimming hole in the winter time? Well… because it’s gorgeous!! You don’t need to swim at Jacob’s Well to appreciate the beauty of it. In fact, I prefer to go in the winter months because NO ONE will be there! You will literally have the whole place to yourself!! You can capture gorgeous photos, enjoy a waterside picnic, and even observe all the wild life within the well.
Blue Hole Regional Park: Another swimming hole in Wimberley… Blue Hole is equally as stunning! It’s definitely a different feel than Jacob’s Well… and that’s why you need to experience both! No swimming is allowed during the winter months… so, it is the perfect time to take in all the undisturbed beauty of the water.
The third stop of this epic Texas Hill Country road trip? Fredericksburg!!! This town was founded in 1846, and is composed of German roots, culture, and heritage. You can see this influence as you wander throughout Fredericksburg… and it is absolutely exquisite. What else is special about Fredericksburg? There’s something for EVERYONE!
