why you must stay at this sustainable cabin in hocking hills
Are you looking for a tranquil and peaceful getaway to the woods? Do you just need some time out in nature? Then the Hocking Hills area in Ohio is the perfect place for you! Hocking Hills is located in southeastern Ohio, and is abundantly filled with miles of beautiful hiking trails and scenic wonders.
Not only is Hocking Hills known for their beautiful landscape… this area is also known for their epic places of lodging! Hocking Hills has seriously been coming up with some of the most unique and stellar cabins, Airbnbs, tree houses, tiny homes, and more! One of these places of lodging that needs to be put on your radar? Idyll Reserve.
What does “Idyll” even mean? “Idyll” is defined as, “An extremely happy, peaceful, or picturesque episode or scene, typically an idealized one. Simple descriptive work in poetry that deals with rustic life, suggests a place of peace and contentment.” Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? This word truly describes the feeling of Idyll Reserve… from the second you step on property, to the second you begin your journey home. I want to give you just a small glimpse of why Idyll Reserve is one of the most perfect getaways out there.
To start, Idyll Reserve is so unique! What makes Idyll Reserve as unique as it is? The fact that it is EPICALLY environmentally focused and sustainable. The folks over at Idyll Reserve, “felt strongly that we could create a sustainable vacation experience that wasn’t just beautiful but thoughtful and careful, as well”. And by golly… they did just that, with a cherry on top!
First off, Hygge Supply was chosen as the designer of the cabins. Hygge Supply creates modern homes as sustainably as possible. And a super cool fact… they are based out of Michigan! Here are some of the amazing characteristics of a home made by Hygge Supply, along with the entire building process: consolidated shipping, pre-made steel SIP panels, local supplies, non-toxic paint and finishes, heat-treated and ethically-sourced natural wood floors and exterior cladding, ultra-efficient appliances, low-voltage lighting, radiant floor heating, mini-split AC units, and the most modern technology available.
Not only is the base of the cabin environmentally friendly, but everything in and around the cabin is also environmentally friendly.
Wallbox electric car chargers
Birch natural non-toxic mattresses
Organic bedding and furnishings made from natural fibers
Durogreen Adirondack chairs
West Elm FSC-certified furniture
Upcycled, recycled, vintage, and handmade decorative pieces and furniture
Organic and locally-sourced coffee, tea, and other amenities
Biodegradable trash bags, 100% recycled paper products, and recycling options for waste
Coffee grounds composting
Non-toxic cleaning and hygiene supplies
One of my favorite aspects of the cabins? The eco-conscious hot tubs! This feature is so lovely for a winter getaway to Hocking Hills! How can a hot tub be eco-friendly? Instead of using the tub's heating system to heat the cold water (which causes it to run at high-energy consumption for up to 12 hours), Idyll Reserve installed hot water hose-bibs and highly-efficient tankless, on-demand water heaters. This provides hot water directly to the hot tubs, using a fraction of the energy required to heat the water in the traditional way. The tubs are cleaned and sanitized, as well. Having an eco-conscious hot tub does not negatively effect the cleanliness or sanitary conditions of the water.
Believe it or not… one thing I was most intrigued by? Their toilet paper! Hahaha! Idyll Reserve’s toilet paper is from a place called Who Gives A Crap. How hilarious is this name?! Not only are the toilet paper rolls designed so adorably… but the rolls are so environmentally friendly. And here’s why…
50% of the profits are donated. That’s such a huge percentage!
They have carbon neutral shipping.
This company is B Corp certified for environmental impact.
The toilet paper is made from sustainably sourced bamboo.
So, the next time you need to stock up on some toilet paper… think about making your purchase a little more eco-focused. Thanks to Idyll Reserve for making me aware of this awesome company!
There are 5 different cabins on the Idyll Reserve property. All cabins come with fully equipped kitchens, hot tubs, and fireplaces.
The South: This is a 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom cabin. It can sleep 2 to 4 people, and there is a queen pull-out couch, if needed.
The Main House: This is a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 1 bunk nook, and 1 powder room cabin. It can sleep 7 to 9 people. This cabin also has a covered porch and 2 fireplaces.
The Cabin: This is a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, and 1 bunk nook cabin. This is the only cabin that was not designed by Hygge Supply. This cabin is dog friendly. This cabin was already built onsite, and it was renovated by the Idyll Reserve team.
The Hillside (the cabin we stayed in): This is a 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom cabin. It can sleep 2 to 4 people, and there is a queen pull-out couch, if needed. This cabin is dog friendly.
The North: This is a 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom cabin. It can sleep 2 to 4 people, and there is a queen pull-out couch, if needed.
So… you’re at one of the best places of lodging ever… what do you do the whole time?! Here are some of my favorite things that the hubs, pups, and I did on our weekend getaway…
We spent time relaxing and creating a spa day! Before our trip, I stocked up on some at home spa products. Over the weekend, I pampered myself with a facial, hair mask, manicure, pedicure, bubble bath, and more! Along with my peaceful spa activities, I took some time to catch up on some leisure reading.
We took a little bit of time to hike around the property of Idyll Reserve! For this trip, we wanted to stay pretty close to our home away from home, and not venture too far out for hikes. Good thing Idyll Reserve has some hiking to be done right on their property! They even have their own cave! And the icing on the cake? After a cold hike, you can warm right up in your hot tub!
We cooked up some pretty yummy meals! We stopped at one of our favorite grocery stores before our trip to pick up some festive treats and meals for the weekend. And that grocery store? Trader Joe’s! Trader Joe’s always has such unique and cute foods to try! Just to see some of the tasty foods we tried… we created delightful hot chocolates, we had an Asian fusion night, and we made our own pizzas!
We did fun things we don’t normally do at home! The main point of this weekend was to utilize the beautiful space we were in… and how did we do that? By building Legos, of course! Haha! We are both mega Star Wars fans, and we brought a fun Lego set with us to complete during the weekend. We’re also Harry Potter fans… so, we took the opportunity to watch the whimsical Harry Potter special on HBO. We loved how many streaming services Idyll had available!
