There’s nothing I love more than a weekend away with the girls!! Now, I’m just going to get down to business here. No poetic writing. No smooth transitions. BOOM DONE. Charleston is my favorite city for a weekend girls trip and here’s why! Aka: I’m giving you a guide to hopefully have just as an amazing trip as I did!
WHAT TO DO
Camellias for afternoon tea! Looking to have a delightful tea in a pastel pink room? Then Camellias is the place for you! I’m not kidding when I say this is the best afternoon tea I’ve ever had! From the girly ambiance to the delicious treats… Camellias is perfect for a girls getaway! Camellias is located inside the gorgeous Hotel Bennett, and serves afternoon tea from 2:00 to 4:00 on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Afternoon tea is $48 per adult and it is HIGHLY recommended to make reservations by calling (866) 267-5251.
Sailing around the harbor in search of dolphins! Sailing while in Charleston was a MUST for me!! How could I not hit up the refreshing, blue ocean waters?! And better yet… why not look for dolphins at the same time?! If this sounds right up your alley, then you best book a tour with Charleston Sailing Adventures! While this company offers a handful of tours, I immediately gravitated towards the dolphin eco sail tour!! This tour includes about a 2 hour sail around Charleston Harbor, via a fun catamaran! I loved this catamaran because you have the option to explore the harbor essentially anywhere on the boat! Ahoy! This tour costs $45 per adult, and the catamaran holds 6 people, along with your sailing captain! Our captain was so awesome and found SO MANY dolphins! We at least saw 10 different dolphins that day! The girls and I agreed… this may have been our favorite part of the weekend!
Shopping along King Street! Okay ladies… get those credit cards ready!! I have NEVER seen better shopping than along King Street in downtown Charleston! Not only does King Street have so many shops, they have such unique shops too!! You’ll see one-of-a-kind boutique stores, all the way to classic shops, like Vineyard Vines. My favorite? The well-known, Charleston favorite… CANDLEFISH. I absolutely fell in love with this store, the second I stepped inside. This store is exploding with fabulously scented candles! I headed right for the candle library, and started to smell everything in my reach. A neat aspect to Candlefish… they don’t name any of their candles. They’re only identified by number. Why? Candlefish doesn’t want people to be persuaded by the name of the candle over the scent. I love this concept! Candlefish has a plethora of candles to choose from in various sizes. I bought a cute, little $10 candle that I can’t wait to start burning! Want to make your own candle?! Check out the various workshops Candlefish has to offer! Trying to plan your shopping spree in advance? See a shopping guide of all the shops on King Street here! And I just have to add this in here… do NOT forget about the Grit & Grace Studio!! They design and create the most beautiful Carolina inspired jewelry!
Relaxing poolside at a beautiful resort! Especially in the summer months, Charleston can be brutally hot. Half the time, it honestly felt like someone was blowing hot hair dryer air in my face. So, why would you not want to spend a whole day at a pool?! We stayed at The Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Marina, and they have an amazing pool area! Beautifully located on the harbor, nothing beats lounging poolside, while listening to the soft waves crashing on shore. There are multiple pools to swim in, along with a festive tiki bar to grab some drinks and snacks! Keep reading to hear more about this marvelous resort!
Magnolia Plantation to take in that classic southern charm! This place was absolutely stunning! From the stunning moss trees, to the blooming hydrangeas… Magnolia Plantation is something out of a fairy tale. It cost $20 for general admission, and there are quite a few add-on activities throughout the plantation. But just walking around and enjoying the scenery was enough for us girls! We loved getting lost throughout the enchanting, wooden paths and secret gardens. We did see a few creatures along the way… there are peacocks freely roaming around the plantation. Feel free to walk up to them and get a photo! Just be respectful that the peacocks are still animals. Treat them nicely!! And then we saw a baby gator… AND A BIG GATOR. Real talk, here. There are wild alligators that live on Magnolia Plantation. Please take this seriously and if you see an alligator, just walk the other way. There are multiple signs all over the plantation warning of alligators. There’s no reason to be afraid, but just keep your eyes open and stay alert. My pro tip for visiting Magnolia Plantation? WEAR BUG SPRAY OR DIE. We did not wear bug spray and it was awful!! We all got so many mosquito bites! No fun!
Photo shoot along Rainbow Row! You honestly cannot visit Charleston without paying a visit to the colorful Rainbow Row!! It’s so aptly named because all the houses are such lovely colors! My favorite colors are the purple, pink and mint houses! How to get to these houses? Just plug “Rainbow Row” into your GPS, and it will lead you right where you need to be! If you’re looking for quality photos, make sure you know where the sun will be at the time you want photos. You will get much better photos when the houses are in the shade!
Biking along the water! Nothing gives off more Notebook vibes than biking throughout Charleston on adorable beach cruisers! The girls and I loved biking along the wooden docks by the water. We actually got complimentary bike rentals through our hotel!! Another perk of staying at The Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Marina!
Listening to local musicians at surf side bars! There are so many local musicians among the Charleston scene, and they are amazing! One night, the girls and I went to listen to reggae inspired artist, Ben Lewis, at Mex 1 Coastal Cantina. This feel-good bar was located in Sullivan’s Island, and was the perfect place to relax and grab a drink. I fell in love with the surfer vibes, and the bartenders were honestly the nicest!
WHERE TO EAT
Butcher & Bee! Follow the bees to a delectable dining experience! And by delectable, I mean insanely delicious and so unique!! I bet half the items on this menu you haven’t even heard of! But don’t let that stop you from trying all the magnificent creations at this restaurant. This eclectic styled restaurant will absolutely leave your mouth in a constant state of happiness. I 110% recommend trying the whipped feta, fancy garlic bread and grilled heirloom summer squash!
The Darling Oyster Bar! Talk about the yummiest brunch ever! Where do I even start?! First off, this restaurant is so adorable, I can’t even stand it!! Second, the food is WOAH… so good! One thing you MUST try… the blueberry and cinnamon biscuit. What I would give to have one of those biscuits right now! And the main course… the best Bloody Mary ever! Hehehe! But for real… I have recently become a Bloody Mary snob, and this one takes the cake! Not only does it taste amazing, but you can add on some tasty features! I added on a hush puppy and a crab leg, and I’m so glad I did! Don’t forget to check out the cute, little gift shop on your way out!
Poogan’s Porch! This place is a classic Charleston go-to! As one of the oldest culinary establishments in Charleston, it offers that low country cuisine you came to Charleston for! The moment you step into Poogan’s Porch, you are surrounded by history. How did the name “Poogan’s Porch” come about? Well… a little furry friend roamed the streets around the restaurant, and the porch on this building became his favorite. Poogan became an icon for this restaurant, and when he passed in 1979, he left his legacy on the restaurant, as it was appropriately named, “Poogan’s Porch”.
Home Team BBQ! I mean, you’re visiting the south. You HAVE to eat some classic southern cuisine! And no better place to do so than at Home Team BBQ! I mean, they have everything classic… pulled pork sliders, mac ‘n cheese, coleslaw, baked beans and more!! My mouth is watering just thinking about it! They have multiple locations in the Charleston area, so you’re bound to be close by to one!
Sugar Bakeshop! Cupcakes, cupcakes, cupcakes!! Need I say more? So… I typically don’t like cupcakes, but Sugar Bakeshop changed my mind real quick!! This cute and quaint neighborhood bakeshop has all the ma and pop type feels. All ingredients are locally sourced, and it truly feels like you’re grabbing a treat from right out of the oven. I tasted the lime cupcake with coconut and it was to die for!! If you don’t like cupcakes, don’t worry! They have all types of treats to offer!
Peace Pie! HELLO most awesome ice cream sandwiches in the universe!! I am obsessed with ice cream sandwiches, and when I found out about Peace Pie I almost went ballistic. Not only are there so many yummy flavors to choose from, but the ice cream sandwiches are in the shape of a peace sign! How fun! I chose the s’mores flavor and about passed out from deliciousness overload.
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams! Are you ready to taste the world’s best ice cream?! Just saying the name “Jeni’s” makes my taste buds tingle. Jeni’s literally is so amazing, that I can’t even describe it! The 2 things I love most about Jeni’s… their ice cream is so smooth and creamy, and there are so many unique flavors to choose from!! My favorite? Wild berry lavender!
WHERE TO STAY
The Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina! I sincerely cannot recommend a more wonderful place to stay when visiting Charleston! Talk about entering a beach side paradise! This hotel is perfectly located on the Charleston Harbor, and is just a short 5 to 10 minute drive from downtown Charleston. Or you can get there by water taxi! Speaking of transportation, this hotel offers a complimentary trolley shuttle service to downtown Charleston. It’s perfect if you don’t want to worry about parking, or if you want to have a little silly juice! Hehehe! But if you do want to drive around, there is complimentary parking at the hotel.
To be honest, it was a struggle getting me out of this hotel because it was so dreamy! The interior was decorated so nautically, and it just really brought out my beachy side! And the rooms… YES PLEASE. They are so spacious and just out of this world! We had a jaw-dropping balcony view of the ocean, which we definitely enjoyed!! The beds were like a cloud… there was a shower and bathtub… they had a turn down service WITH sweet water taffy… and served complimentary key lime cookies. It’s like… WHAT?! What else can I say to convince you to stay here!?
Oh yeah… I can say a lot more!! As I mentioned earlier, the pool area is spectacular. There are 2 pools. There is a larger family pool, and an adult only pool, with cabana rentals available. There’s a lovely tiki bar at the pool for drinks and snacks… loved it here! In the pool area, they serve complimentary water AND ice cream bars! Towels are also provided. Want to get away from the pool scene? There’s a handful of restaurants to enjoy on property, along with a marina store. The hotel offers complimentary bike rentals. And the hotel has multiple walking areas, like right along the water! Oooooh! Can’t forget about all the lawn games they offer and evening bonfires! This resort is truly a dream to stay at!
It’s like… have you booked your trip to Charleston yet?! Hahaha! I truly hope reading this blog post gives you the itch to visit (in my mind) one of the best cities in the United States! Cheers to Charleston!
